NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center

In designing a comprehensive sign system for NYP/CUIMC, CG began with a branding study that examined how to present the hospital and medical center both separately and together. CG diagrammed the institutional relationships, building ownership and sign sequence to understand what the public should see when navigating the vast 27-building campus.

Exterior and interior sign standards were developed to address the inter-related issues of wayfinding, nomenclature, sign design and ADA compliance. Consistency, clarity and use of the logotypes as “overbrands” or “underbrands” were also important factors.

Notable: Extensive patient and visitor testing was used in planning improved wayfinding for this large and complex medical campus.
