Patient-focused wayfinding for Penn’s new patient pavilion

Penn Medicine’s New Patient Pavilion will be an advanced clinical facility with  500 beds, an emergency department and 50 operating and procedure rooms.

The PennFIRST design team is working closely with Penn Medicine staff to simultaneously design from the patient and caregiver’s perspectives. CG is responsible for developing a user-centered interior and exterior wayfinding program, which will welcome and guide patients; this is especially challenging because the new structure is sited in a dense medical district alongside numerous interconnected patient-care buildings serviced by a complicated transit and traffic system.

The design process will include numerous mockups to ensure that wayfinding concepts used throughout the 1.5 million square foot building are user-friendly for visitors and practical and flexible for staff.
