Honoring National Garden Month Through Design at the United States Botanic Garden

Established in 1820 and operating continuously since 1850, the United States Botanic Garden is the oldest public garden in the nation and a living museum dedicated to the study and conservation of plant life. Inspired by George Washington’s vision for a national garden on the National Mall, it welcomes over a million visitors annually to explore its historic Conservatory, outdoor gardens, and Bartholdi Park. The Garden continues to foster appreciation for the natural world by showcasing more than 44,000 plants representing species from around the world.

We are collaborating with landscape architecture firm Unknown Studio to reimagine the entry experience at this historic institution. The team is developing a comprehensive landscape plan that includes identity and wayfinding elements to improve navigation across the multi-acre site. The design will reinforce the Garden’s mission to educate and engage visitors while respecting its historic significance and botanical diversity.

The new plan emphasizes connection and discovery. Gateway signs will highlight the Garden’s presence within the National Mall. Meanwhile, interpretive and directional features will blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, inviting visitors, guiding movement naturally, and enhancing understanding of the Garden’s role as a living monument to conservation and cultural heritage.
