From the colonial period to the Civil War, Richmond’s riverfront and canal system have been the backbone of the city’s commerce, culture and transportation. The city sought to restore and pay homage to the James Rivers’ vital role in its history.
CG created spirited identities for both the Canal Walk and Richmond Riverfront, a three-mile scenic trail along the James River and Kanwha and Haxal Canals. The signs guide visitors through four centuries of history. The sign design reflects the iron work and industrial aesthetic of the Shockoe Slip, factory buildings and canal locks.
Notable: This unique district features Georgian residential architecture and factories, tobacco warehouses, bridges from the post-Civil War period and the largest collection of ornamental ironwork in the US.
